Important Info For Ontario Edible Bean Growers

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Due to unseasonably cold and wet weather, the 2008 planting season for Ontario’s edible bean crop has been delayed. (Edible beans include white beans, black beans, cranberry beans, kidney beans, and Japan and other coloured beans.)

In consultation with Ontario’s edible bean industry, Agricorp said Friday it has taken the following steps to accommodate growers:
Areas with less than 2700 CHU

As previously announced, Agricorp has extended the June 20 planting deadline for edible beans to June 30.

The deadline for reporting acreage remains June 30.
 - All Production Insurance customers must contact Agricorp by phone, fax or email by June 30 to report their planted acreage.
Areas with more than 2700 CHU
 - All Production Insurance customers must contact Agricorp by phone, fax or email by June 30 to report their planted acreage.
 - Growers in areas with more than 2700 CHU who choose to continue planting edible beans after June 30 must contact Agricorp by July 4 to report these additional acres.

Agricorp will inspect any acres of edible beans planted between July 1 and July 4, to determine if the additional acres qualify for coverage.

High Prices Not Enough To Drive Dry Bean Acres

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

In a story on country-guide.ca. FarmLink Marketing Solutions is forecasting sharply lower ending stocks at just 9,000 tonnes, compared to 20,000 tonnes in 2007-08 and the five-year average of 32,000 tonnes.

Dry edible bean supplies have been falling in Canada in recent years, and are poised to drop again by the end of 2008-09.

2008 acres are expected to be down since all competitive crops showed strong returns.  Given the greater workload and risk associated with growing dry beans, even historically high prices of 40 cents per pound (for White Pea Beans) and higher for other market classes of edible beans around seeding time.  These prices didn’t attract enough interest to prevent a decline in the seeded area.

Ontario Dry Bean Acreage Down

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Ontario growers will only plant 55,000 acres of coloured beans this year, reports Statscan. That is down from 75,000 last year. But the acres are up substantially from the March intentions report when farmers said they expected to plant only 40,000 acres.

White bean acres will be 5,000 lower at 80,000. In March farmers had intended to plant 75,000 acres.

Nationally coloured bean acres are estimated at 227.400 acres, down slightly from last year. White beans will see only 135,000 acres planted, down 15,000.

OMAFRA report Edible Beans

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Edible bean planting is 80-95% complete in the southwest, and 10-80% complete in other areas. Emergence has been uniform in most fields, with root rot now evident in some fields. Leafhopper populations have been low to date, but can explode overnight now that forage harvest has begun.

Other regions experiencing Edible Bean problems

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Stat Publishing’s June 20 article ‘Weather worries support beans’ has the following lead in: “Dry edible bean markets maintained their firm tone throughout the past week against tight North American supplies, concerns over China’s crop potential, and the shut down of Argentine exports.
Flooding in China is thought to have affected dry edible bean seeding progress and could expose the crop to greater than normal late season weather risks.”

(includes white beans, black beans, cranberry beans, kidney beans and Japan & other coloured beans)

The 2008 planting season has been fraught with cold and wet weather which has delayed the normal planting of Ontario’s edible bean crop.

In order to accommodate growers who have applied for Production Insurance (PI) coverage, Agricorp will extend the June 20 planting deadline, so that producers in areas with less than 2700 CHU will have until June 30 to get their crop planted, and will still qualify for Production Insurance coverage.

Producers will be expected to:
1. Report their planted acreage no later than June 30
2. Report claims for unseeded acreage benefit no later than June 30 (if they will be unable to complete planting as planned)
